One year before the U.S. election: Torn between foreign policy and domestic polarization

The U.S. faces three major areas of tension with China/Taiwan, Russia/Ukraine, and, again since early October, Israel/Palestine.
U.S. behavior and its impact on Europe and the rest of the world depends heavily on the 2024 presidential election. But foreign policy is playing less of a role in the campaign than domestic polarization over abortion, gun ownership, lawsuits and inflation.
U.S. correspondent Pascal Weber explains political developments in the U.S. since the financial crisis and offers an assessment for the election year and beyond.

Pascal Weber studied political science and modern history at the University of Zurich. For eleven years, he reported as Middle East correspondent from Cairo and Beirut on the Arab Spring, the wars in Syria and Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Libya. Since 2021, Pascal has been living with his family in Washington D.C. and reporting on the USA for the Swiss Radio and Television (SRF).
